When you hear the words custom home what’s the first thing that comes to mind? I’d be willing to bet the first word you think of is expensive! It’s a common misconception, one that even iconic home improvement television show host Bob Vila believes to be true. In a recent article I read, Mr. Villa talks about how countless people would love to design and build a custom home but that only the affluent can actually afford to do so.
I’ve heard people say, “it costs $25,000 for custom drawings alone”. Dakine Homes has been building custom homes for almost 15 years now and I can tell you with the utmost certainty that we have never had a customer spend $25,000 on blueprints and if we had, then we clearly didn’t do our job properly.
A custom home doesn’t need to be your “oh my goodness I just won the lottery” home. It’s a home that you create, something that fits your lifestyle, reflects your personality and most importantly, fits your budget. When you consider that buying a home is probably one of the largest investments you will ever make, doesn’t it make sense to buy something you truly want? Don’t you want a say in how your money is spent?
Now, I’m not going to lie to you, building a custom home can be expensive since you have an endless number of choices with everything from flooring to windows to siding to cupboards and so on. The key words here are can be but it doesn’t have to be. Unlike a production home, you get to decide where your money is spent from the bottom up. For example, you may really want an ICF foundation but could care less about the type of siding used. You may choose the best windows money can offer but install less expensive flooring because you plan to update it later when the kids are a bit older. You get the idea.
Building a custom home means YOU decide and you are guaranteed to get the exact home you want within the budget you set. There are right ways to go about things and there are wrong ways - since building custom homes is our speciality, we can ensure you have the tools necessary to build your new home the right way!
